Other Mommy 2026 Trailer 2: EU Release Date & Novel Adaptation Secrets Revealed

I did not expect a trailer featuring cookie dough ice cream to wreck me. And yet here we are.

Universal dropped Trailer 2 for Other Mommy on September 15, and I’ve replayed it more times than I’d like to admit. Some of that was research. Most of it was a morbid need to hear one line again. The film lands this week, so let’s talk about what’s actually worth your ticket money and what has me nervous.

The Setup (Without Spoiling Your Evening)

Bela is eight. Her parents, Russ and Ursula, are in the slow, quiet kind of marital collapse where nobody screams but everyone’s exhausted. Then something climbs out of her bedroom closet wearing her mother’s face. Bela calls it Other Mommy, because that’s what a kid would do, and the thing doesn’t attack. It asks nicely. It wants in. Not into the house. Into her heart.

That’s the hook, and honestly, it’s nastier than any knife-wielding villain. Monsters that smash doors are scary for ninety seconds. A monster that waits for an invitation, and is patient about it, stays with you.

Trailer 1 vs. Trailer 2: The Gap Is the Whole Point

The July 21 teaser sold pure dread. Suburban rooms, wrong shadows, and then that whisper from the closet: “Can I go inside your heart?” It went viral for a reason. Stripped of context, it’s the kind of sentence that makes your skin crawl.

But Trailer 2 is where the film shows its teeth, and I’d argue it’s the smarter piece of marketing. Here’s what hit me:

  • The lunch scene. Ursula comes home on her break, serves Bela her favorite foods, and everything feels warm. Almost too warm.
  • The pivot. She starts talking about when they were “one person.” She asks Bela if she remembers where she was before she was in her stomach. Bela says no. And then: “You were in my heart… Can I go into your heart?”
  • The confusion. Russ and Grandma Ruth can’t tell the real Ursula from the copy. That’s not a jump-scare premise. That’s a paranoia premise, and I like it far more.

The first trailer’s entity felt alien and wrong. In the second, it’s smooth. It sounds like love. I’d say that evolution is the most unsettling thing in either video. A fake that’s obviously fake is easy. A fake that’s better at tenderness than the real thing? That’s the nightmare.

Jessica Chastain Is Doing Something Here

I’ll be blunt: I was skeptical. Oscar winners going into horror can mean either a career-best or a paycheck with fog machines. From what Trailer 2 shows, Chastain commits fully to a double role, playing a stressed, loving, flawed mother and a cold copy that mimics her too well.

The tell is in the small stuff. A smile held a half-second too long. A voice that’s right in pitch but wrong in warmth. If she sustains that across 93 minutes, people will be talking about this performance well past Halloween.

Savage is the right call. Host proved he can build terror out of almost nothing, and The Boogeyman showed he can handle a studio budget without losing his nerve. A film that revolves around a closet is basically his playground. Having Wan and Blum behind it doesn’t hurt either. That pairing usually means smart marketing and a theatrical push that actually fills seats.

Also, Karen Allen as the grandmother. I’m a sucker for a veteran actor in the “nobody believes me, but I know something’s wrong” seat.

The Book Behind the Movie

Other Mommy adapts Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. Yes, that’s the Bird Box guy. And here’s why the source matters: Malerman wrote the whole thing from the first-person view of the eight-year-old. You only know what Bela knows, in the words Bela has. The horror comes from how little she understands.

That’s brilliant on the page and a genuine headache on screen. A movie can’t live entirely inside a child’s head without feeling like a gimmick. So the adaptation widens the lens to include the parents’ panic, and I think that’s the right instinct. Still, it’s the part I’m most protective of. If the film loses Bela’s innocent, slightly skewed logic, it risks becoming a very good, very generic haunted-family movie. The thing that made the book special has to survive.

The core request, that repeated, polite can I come in, is staying intact, which is a good sign.

Where It Was Made

The working title was “Grandma’s House”, a perfect decoy for keeping leaks down. It’s an American-Irish co-production, shot in Dublin and Wicklow. The production built a custom suburban house set, which matters more than it sounds. When you control the walls, the depth of the closet, and the shadows, you can make a space feel subtly wrong without a single CGI trick. The trailer’s practical effects and lighting suggest they used that control well.

The film is rated R for psychological terror, strong language, and some bloody violence. Universal also confirmed open captions and descriptive audio for the theatrical run, which is a welcome detail and not something every studio bothers to announce.

What the Internet Is Arguing About

Reddit’s r/horror is dissecting Trailer 2 frame by frame, and the most interesting debate is about what Other Mommy actually is. One camp reads her as a literal ancient entity. Another sees an externalized version of Ursula’s buried rage and disappointment, a dark mirror of the marriage itself. I lean toward the idea that the film wants both readings to survive at the same time, and that ambiguity is where good domestic horror lives.

Book readers, meanwhile, keep fighting about the third-act twists and whether the movie will dare to follow them. I won’t spoil anything here, but I’ll say this: if the adaptation softens the ending, I’ll be annoyed.

My Honest Take (Hype and Worries)

What I’m excited about:

  • A premise that scares you with intimacy rather than gore
  • Chastain’s two-faced performance
  • Savage’s track record with confined, claustrophobic spaces
  • A monster with a real chance of becoming iconic

What I’m nervous about:

  • Trailers this good sometimes show the best material up front
  • The shift from a child’s-eye narrator to a broader ensemble could dilute the novel’s strangeness
  • A 93-minute runtime is tight, and the middle can sag if the escalation isn’t paced carefully

Even with those doubts, I’m going opening weekend. The marketing has been unusually patient: two trailers, neither of which gives away the real horror, which is the slow replacement of a mother by something that loves her daughter wrong.

Here’s my prediction. People won’t remember the loudest scare in Other Mommy. They’ll remember a quiet kitchen scene, a plate of pasta, and a question asked in the gentlest voice imaginable. Turn the lights off, and then try to forget it.
