But that strange pairing is precisely what has me interested in the movie.

And judging by the premise, this is one of those films that could either become a genuinely gripping historical thriller or stumble under the weight of its own unbelievable story.

The theatrical release comes first, though. If you’re already searching for where to watch By Any Means online, there’s unfortunately no immediate streaming option.

Here is what we know — and what I think is the most realistic timeline for watching it at home.

When Does By Any Means Release in Theaters?

By Any Means officially opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, September 4, 2026, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution.

That means September is strictly movie-theater territory for anyone hoping to see the film legally on release day.

There is no Paramount+ premiere happening simultaneously, and you shouldn’t expect the movie to suddenly appear on Netflix or inside the regular Amazon Prime Video subscription library.

Honestly, that’s probably the right call.

This is the sort of movie that benefits from a theatrical presentation. The setting, the violence, the oppressive atmosphere of 1960s Mississippi — all of that should play better on a big screen than compressed into a laptop window while notifications keep popping up.

If you’re the kind of person who prefers waiting for streaming, though, the good news is that the wait probably won’t be enormous.

What Is By Any Means Actually About?

The movie takes place in Mississippi in 1966, during the Jim Crow era.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Wayne Strider, a young Black FBI agent who arrives in the South to investigate a series of murders involving civil rights leaders. What he finds is worse than a straightforward murder investigation.

Local institutions are compromised. Racism is deeply embedded in the system. People who should be helping the investigation are either unwilling to cooperate or actively standing in its way.

That’s when the FBI makes a desperate decision.

Instead of relying entirely on conventional law enforcement, federal officials secretly recruit Gregory Scarpa Sr., a notorious Colombo crime-family capo played by Mark Wahlberg.

And yes, Scarpa was a real person.

Known as “The Grim Reaper,” Scarpa was a feared Mafia enforcer. Sending someone like him into Mississippi sounds completely insane on paper, which is also what makes the movie’s central relationship so intriguing.

Strider becomes Scarpa’s handler, creating a partnership between two men who couldn’t be further apart in terms of background, ideology and temperament.

One is a federal agent trying to operate within a deeply broken system.

The other is a professional criminal who has absolutely no interest in playing by the rules.

That contrast should give By Any Means plenty of dramatic fuel.

And personally, that’s the part I’m most curious about.

The movie doesn’t need to convince me that Scarpa was a good guy. He wasn’t. What interests me is whether the screenplay explores the uncomfortable question of what happens when an institution that claims to represent justice decides it needs a criminal to achieve it.

That’s much more interesting than another generic “good guys hunt bad guys” thriller.

Is By Any Means Streaming on Paramount+?

At launch, By Any Means is receiving an exclusive theatrical release, so Paramount+ subscribers won’t be able to watch it at home immediately.

Eventually, though, Paramount+ is the obvious destination.

The transformation is reportedly substantial, too, with Wahlberg using prosthetic work to portray Scarpa.

But the real selling point is the atmosphere.

A crime thriller set against the civil rights era can easily become overly polished or self-congratulatory. By Any Means appears to be aiming for something considerably nastier.

Southern Gothic, political corruption, organized crime, racial violence and an FBI operation that sounds almost too outrageous to be true — that’s a pretty potent combination.

And having Elegance Bratton behind the camera makes the project even more interesting. His previous work on The Inspection showed an interest in stories where institutions and individual identity collide in uncomfortable ways.

That feels like a natural fit for this material.

If you’re a serious movie fan, I’d honestly say see it in theaters if the reviews justify the trip.

The story is strange enough to deserve the big-screen treatment, and I suspect the atmosphere will be one of the movie’s biggest strengths.

If you’re more selective about theater tickets, wait for the digital release. October 2026 is likely to be much easier on the wallet than buying a ticket, popcorn and a drink for the privilege of sitting next to someone checking their phone every five minutes.

And if you already have Paramount+, patience should pay off.

The most realistic expectation right now is:

• September 4, 2026: theatrical release.
• October 2026: probable digital rental and purchase.
• December 2026: probable Paramount+ streaming debut.

By Any Means has one of those premises that sounds almost like someone pitched two completely different movies and decided to combine them. A young FBI agent, a Mafia hitman, 1960s Mississippi and a government operation operating far outside the lines.

I’m sold on the concept.

Now the movie just has to prove it can handle the material.
