There was always going to be a problem with making another show set in the world of The Office. That show became so deeply tied to a particular time, place, and group of characters that almost any attempt to revisit it could have felt like a cheap nostalgia play.

Instead of dragging us back to Dunder Mifflin and trying to recreate the same jokes with different faces, the series moved the mockumentary format somewhere that actually makes sense in 2026: a struggling local newspaper. The result is a workplace comedy that feels familiar without constantly begging you to remember the original.
Now The Paper Season 2 is almost here, and honestly, this is one of those rare spinoffs where I’m more interested in seeing what happens next than I was expecting to be.
The Toledo Truth Teller has survived another crisis, collected some unexpected recognition, and somehow turned a group of inexperienced volunteers into something resembling a functioning newsroom. Season 2 looks ready to make that progress considerably messier.

So yes, technically you can stay up late and start watching immediately. Whether sacrificing sleep for ten episodes of newspaper chaos is a good idea is another question.

The biggest advantage of Peacock’s strategy is obvious: there is no weekly wait. If you have the time, you can watch the entire season in one sitting.
What Will The Paper Season 2 Be About?
This is where things get particularly interesting.
Season 1 ended with the Toledo Truth Teller enjoying a moment that seemed almost impossible when the series began. The newspaper was struggling to survive, the newsroom was packed with people who had little professional journalism experience, and the entire operation often looked like it was being held together with duct tape.
Then came the Ohio Journalism Awards.
The success gave the staff something they desperately needed: confidence.
Unfortunately, confidence might be exactly what Ned Sampson should have been given less of.
Ned returns as editor-in-chief, and the Season 2 story reportedly pushes him toward a much more ambitious investigation. He becomes obsessed with a mysterious and highly exclusive local private club, convinced that there is a major story hiding behind its walls.
As someone who enjoys workplace comedies most when the characters create their own problems, this setup sounds almost perfect.
Ned isn’t some hardened investigative journalist. He’s enthusiastic, sincere and completely convinced that he’s doing the right thing. That’s precisely what makes his increasingly aggressive approach so funny — and potentially disastrous.
His investigation puts the Toledo Truth Teller in a dangerous position, with the newspaper facing serious financial and legal consequences.
That’s a much bigger problem than accidentally sending an embarrassing email to the entire office.
Ned and Mare Finally Deal With the Obvious
Another storyline I’m particularly curious about is Ned’s relationship with Mare Pritti.
Their chemistry has been sitting in the background for long enough that Season 2 seems ready to stop pretending nobody notices it. The two will reportedly try to work out what exactly is happening between them while continuing to function as colleagues.
That sounds simple on paper.
It probably won’t be.
The best workplace comedies understand that romance becomes much funnier when neither person knows how to behave normally around the other. With cameras constantly watching them, Ned and Mare have even less room to hide their awkwardness.
Meanwhile, Esmeralda Grand faces her own professional uncertainty as the newsroom begins changing around her. The publication is evolving, and some of the traditional methods she relied on no longer seem to fit.
The rest of the team also starts becoming more competent.
Don’t worry — they’re still going to make plenty of mistakes.
The Paper Season 2 Cast
One of the show’s biggest strengths is its ensemble, and the main cast is returning for Season 2.
Domhnall Gleeson is back as Ned Sampson, whose combination of enthusiasm and questionable decision-making remains at the heart of the series.
Sabrina Impacciatore returns as Esmeralda Grand, while Chelsea Frei reprises her role as Mare Pritti.
The newsroom also brings back:

New Guest Stars Make Season 2 Even More Tempting
Season 2 is also bringing in a surprisingly fun collection of guest performers.
The announced names include Jon Lovitz, Andy Richter, Lisa Gilroy, Matt Braunger, Toks Olagundoye, and Phil Hendrie.
That’s a pretty eclectic lineup, and it fits the world of The Paper surprisingly well.
These actors are expected to inhabit the wider Toledo ecosystem, including local personalities, members of the private club at the center of Ned’s investigation, and people connected to competing media organizations.
I’m especially curious about Lisa Gilroy. She has the kind of comedic energy that can completely change the temperature of a scene, which is exactly what a mockumentary like this can use when the main cast has settled into its rhythm.
Jon Lovitz and Andy Richter also feel like natural choices for a show that thrives on uncomfortable encounters with strange local personalities.
Greg Daniels Is Still Behind the Wheel
If you’re nervous about The Paper losing the tone that made the original The Office work, there’s at least one major reason to relax.
Greg Daniels remains heavily involved.
The series was created by Daniels and Michael Koman, with both serving as writers and executive producers. Daniels’ résumé speaks for itself: his television work includes the American adaptation of The Office, Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill, and Upload.
Koman brings a different comedic background, including his work on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Nathan For You.
The original The Office creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant also remain involved as executive producers.
Behind the scenes, Universal Television and Universal Studio Group continue to handle production, with Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas also involved.
More importantly, the documentary concept remains intact.
That matters.
The camera isn’t just a gimmick. It gives the characters another relationship to worry about. Every glance, uncomfortable pause, whispered conversation and terrible decision can become part of the joke.
Why The Paper Doesn’t Feel Like Just Another Office Reboot
For me, this is the most interesting thing about the show.
The Office was fundamentally about corporate life in the mid-2000s. The technology was changing, but workplaces still had a certain slow, mundane quality to them.
The Paper has a completely different problem.
Local newspapers are struggling to survive. Print media is shrinking. Online audiences expect information instantly. Social media can turn a minor story into a community-wide argument in minutes. People are working freelance jobs, volunteering, chasing clicks and trying to figure out whether journalism can still pay the bills.
That gives the writers a huge amount of material.
Instead of repeating jokes about office politics, the series can make fun of modern media culture, the desperation for engagement, declining local journalism and people who suddenly consider themselves journalists because they have a phone and an internet connection.
That’s a very 2026 premise.
Ten Episodes and One Big Binge
The Paper Season 2 will have 10 episodes, matching the first season.
Because Peacock is releasing everything simultaneously, the season should take roughly four to five hours to complete depending on individual episode runtimes.
Personally, I think this is exactly the kind of show that benefits from binge watching.
The mockumentary format often hides jokes in the background. A character might make a strange facial expression while someone else is talking, or a tiny detail in the newsroom might pay off several episodes later.
Watching the whole season relatively close together makes those details easier to catch.
And, let’s be honest, once a good workplace comedy gets going, stopping after one episode can be surprisingly difficult.
Should You Watch The Paper Season 2?
If you went into The Paper expecting another The Office, you may have needed some time to adjust.
If you watched it as a new workplace comedy living inside the same universe, however, the appeal becomes much clearer.
Season 2 has the ingredients I want from a continuation: the same characters becoming slightly more complicated, new conflicts that aren’t simply recycled versions of Season 1 problems, a larger world around the central workplace, and enough familiar connections to reward longtime fans.
The biggest question is whether Ned’s increasingly questionable journalism tactics can remain funny without making him impossible to root for.
That’s a tricky line.
But it’s also exactly the sort of problem that can produce great comedy.
With The Paper Season 2 arriving September 9, 2026, on Peacock, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether the Toledo Truth Teller can survive its latest crisis.
And considering how badly these people handled success, I’m not particularly optimistic about their chances.
Which is probably why I’m looking forward to watching it.
