There was a point before Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived when I was almost convinced Marvel was playing with us.

Every trailer seemed to contain another little clue. The Hand was involved. New York looked dirtier and more dangerous than it had in the previous Spider-Man movies. There were prison sequences, mysterious vigilantes, and enough street-level chaos to make every Daredevil fan start connecting dots that probably weren’t meant to be connected.

And then there was the biggest question of all: Where was Matt Murdock?

For months, Reddit was basically on fire with theories about a Spider-Man and Daredevil team-up in Brand New Day. Some fans were convinced Charlie Cox would appear during the prison sequence. Others believed Marvel had digitally removed Daredevil from trailers in another attempt to recreate the infamous No Way Home marketing trick.

I can’t even blame fans for being skeptical.

At this point, Marvel has trained audiences to distrust almost every interview surrounding a major spoiler.

The difference this time is that Cox’s denial turned out to be exactly what it sounded like.

Daredevil does not physically appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

There isn’t a surprise hallway entrance. There isn’t a rooftop conversation. There isn’t a moment where Matt Murdock hears Spider-Man’s heartbeat and realizes exactly who is underneath the mask.

And, unfortunately for anyone who spent months imagining it, there isn’t a glorious Spider-Man/Daredevil fight against the Hand.

Why Everyone Thought Daredevil Was Coming

The biggest reason the Daredevil rumors became so convincing was the direction Marvel took Peter Parker after Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Peter is no longer the teenager surrounded by Avengers, school friends and billionaire technology. Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter Parker from the memories of the people closest to him, leaving him almost completely alone.

That makes Brand New Day feel much closer to the classic street-level Spider-Man stories.

He’s broke. He’s isolated. He’s operating in New York without the safety net he once had. And, most importantly, he’s dealing with problems that don’t require Doctor Strange or the Avengers to solve them.

Then Marvel introduced the Hand.

That was the moment things really got suspicious.

The Hand has been associated with Daredevil for years, particularly through the Netflix-era Marvel shows and the mythology surrounding Matt Murdock’s corner of New York. Seeing Spider-Man fighting red-clad ninja warriors immediately made fans ask the obvious question:

Why would Marvel put the Hand in a Spider-Man movie if Daredevil wasn’t somehow involved?

It was a completely reasonable question.

The second major clue was the prison material.

Spider-Man fighting inside a heavily secured prison was already unusual enough, but footage and rumors surrounding Daredevil: Born Again reportedly showed Matt Murdock in prison clothing. Suddenly, the internet had created an entire movie in its head.

The theory was simple:

• The Hand wants him dead.
• Spider-Man gets involved.
• Peter discovers Matt’s identity or crosses paths with him.
• The two heroes eventually fight together.

It sounded almost too perfect.

And that was probably the problem.

Charlie Cox Said He Wasn’t There — Nobody Believed Him

Charlie Cox didn’t exactly help calm the speculation, even when he publicly denied appearing.

His comments were treated by fans as another classic Marvel misdirection tactic. After all, Marvel actors have become professionals at denying things that later turn out to be true.

Andrew Garfield had already become the poster child for this kind of denial after No Way Home, so every time Cox insisted that Daredevil wasn’t part of the movie, Reddit basically responded with, “Sure, Matt.”

So Who Fills the Street-Level Void?

Instead of Matt Murdock, Brand New Day gives Peter another extremely dangerous partner — although “partner” might be stretching the word.

Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher, becomes one of the film’s most important street-level figures.

That choice actually makes sense for the direction of Peter’s character.

Peter is trying desperately to maintain his moral line. Frank Castle doesn’t have the same problem.

The contrast between them gives the movie some of its strongest tension. Peter wants to stop criminals without becoming a killer, while Frank has already crossed that line and has no intention of apologizing for it.

That conflict becomes especially interesting when Peter’s own abilities become more dangerous.

One of the most talked-about sequences involves Peter removing his power inhibitor and allowing himself to unleash considerably more of his strength. But even when he is operating at that level, Peter deliberately uses webbing and other precautions to avoid killing his enemies.

That says a lot about where this version of Spider-Man is heading.

He isn’t becoming Punisher.

He’s becoming a more experienced, more physically intimidating Spider-Man who understands exactly how easily power can turn into something ugly.

The Movie Still Feels Like Daredevil’s World

This is where I think some of the Reddit discussion has missed the point.

Daredevil doesn’t need to physically appear for Brand New Day to feel connected to his corner of the MCU.

The atmosphere is unmistakable.

The movie spends far more time in the criminal underworld of New York than the previous Spider-Man films did. Peter is dealing with organized threats, corrupt institutions and enemies who aren’t interested in conquering planets.

They’re interested in controlling streets.

That’s classic street-level Marvel territory.

The Department of Damage Control also becomes a major part of the conflict, with William Metzger operating inside a system that has become increasingly corrupted. Meanwhile, the introduction of Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, pushes the movie in a stranger direction without completely abandoning its grounded foundation.

It’s an odd mixture.

And honestly, I think that works better than another Spider-Man movie immediately throwing Peter into another multiverse disaster.

The Daredevil Connection Marvel Actually Cut

Here’s the part that makes the whole situation particularly frustrating for fans.

Even though Matt Murdock isn’t in the final film, there was reportedly a much more direct connection to the Defenders corner of Marvel that didn’t survive the editing process.

That connection was Claire Temple, played by Rosario Dawson.

For fans who followed the Netflix Marvel shows, Claire isn’t some random supporting character. She became one of the connective tissues between characters such as Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

According to reports surrounding the production, Dawson filmed material for Brand New Day that was ultimately removed.

The sequence reportedly involved Peter being seriously injured after a brutal confrontation. He suffers a gunshot wound and ends up receiving medical treatment while doctors work around his Spider-Man costume.

Then Claire appears.

She examines an X-ray and eventually interacts with Peter, creating a much more subtle connection between him and the old Defenders-era world.

I actually think this would have been a great scene.

Not because Claire would have needed to deliver some giant Marvel exposition dump, but because she could have acknowledged Peter in the way only someone with years of experience treating masked vigilantes could.

No giant portal.

No multiverse speech.

No superhero roll call.

Just two people in a New York hospital who understand that being a masked hero can leave you broken, exhausted and completely alone.

That would have been much more powerful than another cameo designed purely to make audiences cheer.

Reddit’s Biggest Daredevil Theories

The absence of Matt Murdock has naturally created an entirely new wave of theories.

1. Marvel Deliberately Misdirected Everyone

This is probably the most believable explanation for the trailer speculation.

Marvel has done this before.

The No Way Home marketing campaign famously manipulated shots to hide the presence of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Naturally, fans began looking at Brand New Day frame by frame.

Some Reddit users noticed Hand soldiers appearing to react strangely in certain shots. Others thought specific pieces of choreography looked like they were designed around an invisible second character.

The theory was that Daredevil had been digitally removed.

In reality, the scenes apparently work perfectly well as Spider-Man-only action sequences.

Still, I can’t deny that the theory was fun.

2. The Timelines Simply Don’t Line Up

Another theory is considerably less exciting but much more practical.

The MCU timeline has become ridiculously complicated.

Brand New Day takes place several years after No Way Home, while the events of Daredevil: Born Again are unfolding around the same broad period. Matt Murdock has his own problems, his own enemies and his own battle over the future of New York.

Peter doesn’t have to be involved in every crisis happening across the city.

New York is a huge place.

For once, maybe two superheroes simply didn’t happen to be standing on the same rooftop.

3. Brand New Day Is Quietly Building Daredevil Season 3

This is the theory I find the most interesting.

The Hand’s presence may not be there to introduce Daredevil into Spider-Man’s story. It could be there to prepare the ground for Daredevil’s next chapter.

If the characters connected to the Hand continue into Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, then Peter’s conflict with the organization could effectively weaken the enemy network before Matt eventually has to deal with whatever remains.

That’s a much more patient approach to shared-universe storytelling.

Marvel doesn’t always need to put two heroes together immediately.

Sometimes it’s enough to let one story change the circumstances of another.

What About the Ending and the Post-Credits Scene?

The ending of Brand New Day initially feels surprisingly personal.

Peter is still trying to rebuild his life after everything that happened to him. His isolation hasn’t magically disappeared, and the possibility of reconnecting with people from his past gives the ending an emotional quality that feels appropriate for this version of the character.

Then Marvel pulls the rug out from under everyone after the credits.

There is no traditional mid-credits superhero cameo.

Instead, the movie gives us a strange digital sequence involving the Spider-Man tracking application originally associated with Ned Leeds.

The camera pulls away from Earth.

Then farther.

And farther.

The familiar world becomes tiny against the darkness of space.

Then the system glitches.

A second Spider-Man signal appears.

That’s it.

And somehow, that’s enough to send the entire Marvel fandom into meltdown.

The most popular interpretation is obviously that we’re looking at another Spider-Man from another reality.

And if that’s true, the implications are enormous.

After spending the entire movie pulling Peter back toward street-level storytelling, Marvel suddenly reminds us that the multiverse isn’t gone.

It’s just waiting.

Why the Missing Daredevil Scene May Actually Be a Good Thing

As much as I would have loved to see Charlie Cox standing next to Tom Holland, I’m increasingly convinced that keeping Daredevil out of Brand New Day may have been the smarter decision.

A Spider-Man and Daredevil team-up is one of those ideas that can become almost impossible to satisfy.

Fans don’t just want the two characters to appear together. They want the perfect rooftop conversation, perfect fight choreography, perfect jokes, perfect references to their shared comic history and probably Kingpin somewhere in the background.

That’s a lot of expectations for one scene.

Instead, Brand New Day gives Peter his own street-level story.

The Hand exists.

The Punisher exists.

The criminal underworld exists.

The MCU’s darker New York exists.

And Daredevil remains somewhere in that world, dealing with problems of his own.

That leaves the door wide open.

If Marvel eventually decides to put Peter Parker and Matt Murdock together, the meeting doesn’t have to feel forced. It can happen because the stories naturally collide.

And when that finally happens, I suspect the audience reaction will be much bigger precisely because Brand New Day made us wait.

For now, the Spider-Man Brand New Day Daredevil team-up remains one of the biggest things that didn’t happen in the movie.

But I’m not convinced Marvel is finished with the idea.

The Hand, the street-level tone, the discarded Claire Temple material and that bizarre Spider-Man signal floating somewhere beyond Earth all feel like pieces of a much larger puzzle.

Maybe Matt Murdock wasn’t supposed to be the surprise cameo.

Maybe Peter Parker was simply being moved into the neighborhood.

And sooner or later, Daredevil is going to notice.
